As a candidate for District Attorney in Harris County, I believe it’s crucial for voters to understand how our criminal justice system works. Here’s an overview of what typically happens when someone is charged with a crime in our county:
The process begins when law enforcement makes an arrest. Officers must follow strict procedures to protect the rights of the accused.
After arrest, the accused is booked into jail and appears before a magistrate within 48 hours. The magistrate informs them of their rights and may set bail.
In Harris County, we use a risk assessment tool to help determine bail. As your DA, I’ll work to ensure this system balances public safety with the rights of the accused.
My office will review cases to determine if there’s sufficient evidence to file charges. We’ll focus on prosecuting serious crimes while considering alternative programs for non-violent offenses.
In Texas, felony cases must be presented to a grand jury. They decide if there’s enough evidence to indict. I’ll ensure this process is fair and thorough.
The accused is formally charged and enters a plea. My office will always be prepared at this stage.
This includes discovery, motions, and plea negotiations. We’ll work efficiently to resolve cases when appropriate.
If a plea agreement isn’t reached, the case goes to trial. My prosecutors will be well-prepared and seek justice, not just convictions.
I believe in appropriate sentencing that balances punishment, rehabilitation, and public safety.
My Commitment to Harris County:
As your District Attorney, I pledge to:
Your vote for me is a vote for a safer, fairer Harris County. Together, we can build a justice system that works for everyone.
